The Italian authorities have launched an investigation into Amazon, suspecting the company of VAT fraud amounting to over 1.2 billion euros. The investigation, conducted by the Italian financial police between 2019 and 2021, alleges that Amazon failed to collect and remit VAT on sales made by third-party sellers based outside the European Union. Under a 2019 Italian law, platforms like Amazon are responsible for collecting VAT from such sellers, a measure that anticipated a 2021 EU-wide regulation. Amazon has not commented on the investigation but has stated its commitment to complying with applicable tax laws and reported paying 1.4 billion euros in taxes in Italy in 2023.
